When it comes to first birthday themes, I wanted something that was both adorable and totally unique for my little one’s big day. Enter the world of Squishmallows – those irresistibly soft, squishy plush toys that have captured hearts everywhere! Our “This Squish is One” themed party was the perfect blend of cute, cozy, and completely memorable.

Why Choose a Squishmallow Theme?
Squishmallows have become a modern classic, beloved by kids and adults alike. Their soft, huggable nature and adorable designs make them perfect for a first birthday celebration. Plus, the pastel colors and sweet characters photograph beautifully – always a win for those milestone moments!
The DIY Magic: Custom Party Decorations
Monthly Milestone Display
One of my favorite elements was creating a monthly milestone photo display featuring our little one’s journey from newborn to one year old. I designed custom circular tags with that signature Squishmallow aesthetic – soft colors, simple fonts, and that unmistakable charm. Each month was represented with a photo clipped to twine, creating a timeline of precious memories that guests loved looking through.
The key to making these tags feel authentic to the Squishmallow brand was using their signature color palette – soft pastels like mint green, baby pink, lavender, and sunshine yellow. I made sure each tag had that clean, modern look that matches the Squishmallow packaging style.

Cake and Cupcake Toppers
No birthday party is complete without show-stopping desserts! I created matching cake toppers that perfectly complemented our theme. The “This Squish is One” messaging tied everything together beautifully, and the toppers added that professional, cohesive look that makes party photos really pop.

For the cupcakes, I designed smaller coordinating toppers that echoed the same design elements. Having matching pieces throughout the party really elevated the overall aesthetic and made everything feel intentionally designed rather than thrown together.

Party Favor Perfection
Those colorful mesh bags filled with Squishmallow-themed goodies were a huge hit! I used different colored mesh bags to tie into our color scheme, and filled them with small toys and treats that guests could take home. The “Adopt a Squishmallow” sign added such a sweet touch – it made the favor station feel like part of the party experience rather than just an afterthought.

Tips for Creating Your Own Squishmallow Party
Color Coordination is Key: Stick to that soft, pastel palette that Squishmallows are known for. Think cotton candy colors rather than bold, bright hues.
Mix Textures: Just like real Squishmallows, incorporate soft textures throughout your decor. Felt, plush elements, and even some faux fur can add to the cozy vibe.
Keep It Simple: The beauty of Squishmallows is in their simplicity. Don’t overcomplicate your designs – clean lines and sweet messaging work best.
Photo Opportunities: Create multiple photo moments throughout your space. That milestone display and favor station both doubled as perfect photo backdrops!
The Result: A Party to Remember
The “This Squish is One” theme created exactly the warm, joyful atmosphere I was hoping for. Guests loved the cohesive design elements, and the birthday boy was surrounded by all the soft, squishy goodness his little heart could desire. Most importantly, we created beautiful memories that we’ll treasure forever.
