Putting Your Mental Health First

In today’s fast-paced, hyper-competitive world, the pressure to succeed professionally can be overwhelming. We’re often told to work more, achieve more, and constantly push our limits. However, this relentless pursuit of career success can come at a significant cost: our mental health. For months I have been struggling with managing all the hats, from the loss of two loved ones, to a parent in and out of the hospital, renovations and growing a tiny human, life seems to be pulling me in 90 different directions. With all that’s going on it’s no surprise that prioritizing mental well-being over job demands is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity for a fulfilling, balanced life.

1. Sustaining Long-Term Productivity

Contrary to the common belief that relentless hard work and long hours equate to higher productivity, studies have shown that mental health issues like stress, anxiety, and burnout can drastically reduce productivity. When you prioritize your mental health, you create a sustainable work environment where you can perform consistently at your best. Regular breaks, manageable workloads, and mental wellness practices like mindfulness and meditation can help maintain your productivity over the long term.

2. Enhancing Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills

Mental health significantly influences your cognitive functions, including creativity and problem-solving abilities. When you’re mentally exhausted, your brain struggles to come up with innovative solutions or think outside the box. Prioritizing mental well-being, on the other hand, helps keep your mind clear and sharp, allowing you to approach challenges with a fresh perspective and enhanced creativity.

3. Building Better Relationships

Your mental state impacts how you interact with colleagues, clients, and even your personal relationships. If I had a dollar for every time a bad day was taken out on my husband and vice versa we could both retire by now. Stress and burnout can lead to irritability, impatience, and a general lack of empathy. By taking care of your mental health, you ensure that you’re more present, patient, and understanding, fostering stronger and more positive relationships both at work and in your personal life.

4. Preventing Burnout

Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion often caused by prolonged stress and overwork. It can lead to serious health issues, including depression and anxiety disorders. By putting your mental health first, you can recognize the early signs of burnout and take proactive steps to prevent it. This might involve setting boundaries, learning to say no, and ensuring you have time to recharge. We unfortunately still have a long way to go in this regard, I have fallen prey to comments about my attitude which was mistaken for me trying to set boundaries. Do not let this deter you, it is crucial to stand up for yourself.

5. Achieving Work-Life Balance

A job is an important part of life, but it should not be your entire life. Prioritizing mental health helps you establish a healthy work-life balance. This balance is vital for your overall well-being, allowing you to enjoy other aspects of life such as hobbies, family, and personal growth. When you balance work with personal life, you’re more likely to feel fulfilled and less likely to resent your job.

6. Setting a Positive Example

When you prioritize your mental health, you set a positive example for others. This is especially important if you’re in a leadership position. By openly valuing mental well-being, you encourage a workplace culture that supports mental health, reduces stigma, and promotes overall wellness. This can lead to a more supportive and productive work environment for everyone.

7. Living a Fulfilled Life

Ultimately, prioritizing mental health is about living a fulfilled and meaningful life. Your job is just one part of your identity and life’s purpose. I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a friend, being an employee is just one hat I wear. By focusing on your mental well-being, you ensure that you can enjoy and appreciate all aspects of life, not just your professional achievements. It allows you to pursue passions, maintain meaningful relationships, and find joy in everyday moments.

While we all wish to succeed professionally, it should not come at the expense of your mental health. By putting your mental health first, you not only enhance your work performance but also ensure a happier, more balanced, and fulfilling life. Remember, a healthy mind is the foundation of true success. And never forget to put yourself and your mental well being before any job.
